Carlos Sainz and Ferrari have confirmed their strong form and can hope for another triumph a week after Austin’s double victory. Despite his good form, Sainz somewhat surprisingly raced to pole position in qualifying in Mexico City on Saturday in 1:15.946 minutes and laid the foundation for a successful race on Sunday (9 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). For Sainz it is the sixth pole of his career.
World champion Max Verstappen secured an advantage in the title race with Lando Norris. The Dutchman finished second in the Red Bull ahead of third-placed Norris. At least Norris actually looked like the fastest driver for long stretches of qualifying, but in the end he couldn’t put together a clean lap.
Nico Hülkenberg (Emmerich) put his Haas in tenth place on the grid. Before the 20th of 24 races of the season, Verstappen is 57 points ahead of Norris in the championship standings.
Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, who is fighting for his future at Red Bull, experienced a debacle at the home game of all places. The Mexican complained about braking problems in slow sections of the track in Q1 and couldn’t get past 18th on the grid. Oscar Piastri disappointed in the second McLaren in 17th place. The Australian had one lap canceled because he exceeded the track limits. Celebrating Fernando Alonso only finished 13th in his 400th Grand Prix weekend of his career in the Aston Martin. He was also unlucky because Racing Bulls driver Yuki Tsunoda slipped into the track barriers shortly before the end of the second qualifying section and the Spaniard was therefore unable to complete his lap.
