It seems that the possibilities of making a new change to the football offside law in favor of attackers have become weak, after high-level sources expressed doubts about the progress of the experiments.
Amending the offside law was first proposed in 2020, but the Corona pandemic severely affected the conduct of the initial experiments, after which tests were conducted on youth leagues in Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden.
Former Arsenal coach, Frenchman Arsene Wenger, was one of the most prominent supporters of changing the law in his capacity as head of global football development at FIFA.
Updates on these experiments are expected to be presented at the meeting of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Council of the International Federation of Association Football.
Prominent sources indicated to the British news agency PA Media that interest in the developments of these initial experiments appears to be outside the scope of the International Football Association Board.
Wenger’s proposal states that a player is not offside if any part of his body with which he can score a goal is at the same level as the second last defender when playing the ball.
If things go well with this proposal, it will be the biggest amendment to the offside law since 1990, when it was established that an attacker is not offside if he is at the same level as the defender and not behind him.
The emergence of the video assistant referee technology caused a great stir in cases of offsides involving small parts of the body, such as the toe or armpit.
