The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken initiatives to increase the tax net. As a part of this, all government employees under the jurisdiction of two City Corporations of Dhaka and Gazipur and Narayanganj City Corporations, officials and employees of multinational companies including scheduled banks have been made mandatory to submit income tax returns online.
Tuesday (October 22) NBR chairman. This special instruction has been given in an order signed by Abdur Rahman Khan.
In this instruction entitled ‘Special order regarding electronic filing of returns by natural person taxpayers’, it is stated that, by virtue of the powers conferred in sub-section (4) of section 328 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, the National Board of Revenue hereby orders the following natural person taxpayers to file income tax online through electronic mode. Filing of returns has been made mandatory.
To whom this directive will apply, they are:
(1) All government employees under the jurisdiction of income tax circles located in Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Gazipur and Narayanganj City Corporation.
(2) Officers and employees of all Scheduled Banks.
(3) Officers and employees of all mobile telecom service providers.
(4) Officers and employees of Unilever Bangladesh Limited, British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company Limited, Marico Bangladesh Limited, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, Bata Sue Company (Bangladesh) Limited, Nestlé Bangladesh PLC.
As per the rules, it will come into force from the date of issuance of these instructions. Efforts were being made to increase the scope of tax for a long time. This is the first time that the submission of income tax return has been made mandatory for the officers and employees of Unilever Bangladesh Limited, British American Tobacco Bangladesh Company Limited, Marico Bangladesh Limited, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, Bata Sue Company (Bangladesh) Limited, Nestlé Bangladesh PLC working in Bangladesh.
