The first case of death of a person infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) was reported in the United States.

According to Reuters, the Louisiana State Department of Health announced on the 6th (local time) that an American patient hospitalized with H5N1 died.

The patient who died was over 65 years old and had underlying diseases. He was hospitalized on the 18th of last month after becoming infected with H5N1 after being exposed to backyard chickens and wild birds.

As a result of analyzing the virus collected from the Louisiana patient, it was found that the virus detected in this patient belonged to the D1.1 genotype.

This virus is a different type from the virus ‘B3.13’, which was previously detected in dairy cattle and some poultry in the United States, and in people who came into contact with them.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 70 people in the U.S. have been infected with H5N1 since last April. Most of them were livestock workers working on dairy or poultry farms.

“People who work with or have contact with birds, poultry and cattle are at higher risk,” Louisiana health officials said in a statement, adding, “The risk to the general public remains low.”
