(ANSA) – FLORENCE, MARCH 19 – Fedagripesca Toscana calls for the culling of cormorants in the Orbetello lagoon (Grosseto) because they are “too many” and “the ecosystem and fishing are at risk”.
“The ecosystem and fishing activities in the Orbetello lagoon are at serious risk due to the overpopulation of cormorants, which now reign supreme”, explains Andrea Bartoli, regional vice-president, “they have reached an over-population never seen before. A plan for culling for these birds”.
In particular, cormorants “eat sea bream, sea bass and mullet but also eels, considered a protected species and for which fishermen, with the latest law of 2024, are subject to a stop to fishing for the first six months of the year – continues Bartoli – the situation is therefore not balanced” concluding that “as fishermen we ask for serious intervention from the institutions, which have not addressed the problem for years”, “the fishing activity in the Orbetello lagoon economically supports more than 100 families”.
