The Flash Gordon character came to light nearly 90 years ago, on January 7, 1934, through a cartoon created by the cartoonist Alex Raymond and originally published as the Sunday page of the New York American Journal to compete with the popular adventures of Buck Rogers. His success was such that he became an iconic character, with film and television adaptations.

Framed in the science fiction subgenre known as space opera, it is set in a universe in which a strange planet approaches Earth, threatening to destroy it, and the scientist Hans Zarkov tries to prevent the tragedy. In this space epic, Flash Gordon is a famous polo player who is traveling aboard a plane, along with reporter Dale Arden, when they crash due to a collision with a meteorite. By parachuting, they will fall near Zarkov’s laboratory, who will stop them by mistaking them for spies. This was the origin of numerous cartoons and versions in various formats, which have greatly influenced other science fiction and superhero comics.

After several film serials, several directors became interested in making a Flash Gordon feature film, including Federico Fellini o George Lucas. Finally, Dino de Laurentiisowner of the rights to the adaptation, hired Mike Hodges to direct the film, after some initial attempts with Nicolas Roeg y Sergio Leone.
