The former national coach and FC Bayern – Hansi Flick almost had a second term in Munich. A new report now reveals details from the summer.
On Wednesday there will be a big reunion in the Champions League: Coach Hansi Flick welcomes his former club FC Bayern with FC Barcelona. The historically successful year of 2020, in which the German record champions won the “Sextuple” under Flick, is still having an impact – the Munich team has not been able to build on this success since then, especially at European level.
There was almost a comeback for Flick after his first term in Munich (2019-21). The “Bild” now reports: Talks between Bayern sports director Max Eberl and ex-coach Flick are said to have been well advanced in the summer before the 51-year-old decided against bringing Flick back.
Exciting: According to the report, Flick has actually declared his willingness to return to Säbener Strasse – but probably only for a year. In addition, Bayern are said to have already been in touch with Vincent Kompany at this point, who ultimately became Munich’s new coach. Probably also because Eberl wanted a complete new start, not a nostalgic comeback and a throwback to “old times”.
However, it is also said that although Eberl communicated his decision early on within the club, Flick assumed that he would actually become Bayern coach again after a phone call on May 11th. After that, however, Eberl simply stopped calling. There was never an official rejection of Flick.
FC Barcelona ultimately benefited from this circumstance, securing the 59-year-old’s services in the summer. The Catalans have been playing great again under Flick, are leaders in Spain with nine wins from ten games and have already scored 33 goals.
