What scares poverty is celebration, said the writer and historian Luiz Antonio Simas at the beginning of the Paraty International Literary Festival, in a meeting that evoked the orixá Exu, “the lord of the streets”, in his words .
This set the tone for this year’s event. The most difficult topics were always present: climate change, violence, racism, hatred and war. But instead of getting lost in nihilism, a note of hope always prevailed, as guests avoided resignation and pointed to literature as a lever towards salvation.
An example was the meeting with Édouard Louis, who fulfilled the great expectations that had preceded him as the most appreciated writer of the edition, so much so that he was the only one that Ana Lima Cecilio’s curatorship left alone on a table.
The French writer recalled his violent childhood, drawing an escape map for the victims of domination. “Those who are least free are the ones who manage to free themselves,” he said.
But his case and that of Simas are just two examples.
The meeting with the influencer Felipe Neto satisfied a large audience, mobilizing a crowd of children eager for a photo with the influencer, and will undoubtedly be one of the most remembered moments of the edition. With humorous rhetoric and powerful phrases, Neto arrived by helicopter under heavy security to preach against capitalism, but he also saw redemption in reading.
