Press release on October 8, 2024
The Department is on the ORANGE “flooding rain” alert from 3:00 am until 2:00 pm
The department is also on the Yellow “thunderstorm” alert from 2:00 am to 6:00 pm
Description and development of the weather event:
The meteorological episode started in the west of the PACA region with 10-20 mm of cumulative precipitation so far.
In the Alpes-Maritimes, the weather will deteriorate around 7-8 am with an increase in rain:
• On the coast: accumulations of 40-60 mm of rain are expected in a short time (2-3 hours) between 8:00 and 11:00. Storm cells are unlikely to be stationary at this time, reducing the risk over urbanized coastal areas.
However, because storm cells can be intense over a short period of time, they are subject to monitoring supported by State services. Accumulations of 60-70 mm are expected over the entire episode.
• In Mercantour: total accumulations of 70 to 100mm are expected. Storm activity is less intense than on the coast but there will be regular precipitation during the event.
The wind will not be significant with gusts of 70-80 km/h at most. A skull can be placed locally (0.5mm/1cm in diameter).
No river overflows are currently observed.
Emergency services activity:
• Currently, no intervention from the emergency services has been reported in relation to the weather.
