With his camera he recounted an unprecedented Russia, documenting the life of an Ural metropolis like Chelyabinsk for over 40 years, immortalizing the news and portraying the inhabitants, entering the toughest prisons in the country to report on tattooed criminals. Sergei Vasiliev, one of the foremost photojournalists of the former Soviet Union, World Press Photo winner, arrives in Florence. From 23 June to 4 October at the Semiottagono delle Murate, his shots will be exhibited in the exhibition “Sergej Vasiliev: an indiscreet look at the unknown USSR”, the first anthological exhibition in Italy dedicated to him.
But the event is enriched with collateral initiatives. On 23 June, at 5 pm, Valentina Gensini, artistic director of Murate Art District, will talk with another international photojournalist, Massimo Sestini and the curator of the exhibition Marco Fagioli at the MAD spaces, introduced by Valentina Gensini, artistic director of Murate Art District (to participate in the talk “A day in the life of Sergej Vasiliev”: info.mad@musefirenze.it, tel 0552476873).
After the meeting there will be the inauguration of the exhibition in the presence of the representatives of the local institutions and to follow an exclusive dinner at the restaurant “Le Carceri” (8 pm) during which three original photographs by Sergej Vasiliev will be up for grabs. Dinner is by reservation only at a cost of 50 Euros (info@amiciermitage.it, 348.6108121, by 20 June) the proceeds of the evening will go to the Amicei del Mseo Ermitage association, an important mediator in the creation of relations between Italy and Russia. From July to September, some historical Florentine tattoo artists will come to animate the spaces adjacent to the Semiottagono, offering the possibility to broaden the gaze on the art of tattooing and photography with dedicated photo sets. There will be theater and dance shows and live performances.
