The President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, has championed a fight against corruption, in June 2023 he announced in his message for the fourth year of his administration, a frontal war against corrupt officials and that a prison, like the Cecot, will be built to put prisoners who take money from Salvadorans.
“Just as we have fought the gangs head-on, with all the forces of the State and with all the legal tools that we can without hesitation at any time, so we will also begin a head-on war against corruption,” the president expressed before the Legislative Assembly on the occasion of his four years in office.
Hours later there were raids on the residences of the former ARENA president, Alfredo Cristiani, whom Bukele accused of being corrupt and one of the politicians “who did the most damage to our country.”
The president said that they would seek “to return what was stolen.” Initially it emerged that Cristiani Burkard took money from the State to pay off the debts of his companies, which at the beginning of his mandate, in 1989, were in the red.
On June 6, 2023, the Attorney General’s Office detailed that 156 properties were confiscated from Cristiani Burkard and 15 bank accounts and 42 vehicles, worth more than $85 million. Of what was seized are: 143 properties belonging to the company Cristiani Burkard, SA de CV; 7 properties of Droguería Santa Lucía SA de CV and 6 properties of Sociedad Montebro SA de CV
In the administration of President Bukele, the former president of Bandesal, Juan Pablo Durán, and now Cristian Flores, presidential commissioner for strategic projects, have been captured and prosecuted, both for acts of corruption, for asking for bribes.
Durán is prosecuted for the crimes of arbitrary acts and improper bribery (asking for bribes) to the detriment of the public administration. He was captured on September 30, 2023, at the San Oscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport.
On the other hand, the Prosecutor’s Office issued an arrest warrant yesterday against the Presidential Commissioner of strategic projects, Christian Herson Flores Sandoval, for the crime of Improper Bribery as the Direct Author.
The investigations show that Flores, using his position as Presidential Commissioner, demanded money from people and companies in exchange for benefits and preferential participation in the government’s strategic projects.
