Fluoroquinolone antibiotics: Spain looks the other way while other countries take measures due to their serious harm

On several occasions we have published on the harms of antibiotic drugsand specifically the havoc that is being caused by a group of these: fluoroquinolonas.

It is true that Health has warned of its serious damage, but as he almost always does, lukewarmly, without taking the matter seriously. He recognizes that they are causing a lot of suffering but does almost nothing to remedy it.

Fluoroquinolones are associated with adverse reactions that, although they occur very rarely, are serious, disablinglong-lasting and potentially irreversible.

Contrast the attitude of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) with what is done in other countries.

In the United States, for example, those affected by these medications are requesting the ICD-10 code (it is the acronym in English for the International Classification of Diseases) for the disability due to adverse effects from fluoroquinolones through this Foundation. They have delivered the signatures that were collected last month and are awaiting confirmation.

While in Spain the press still does not know about the case, in the USA and in various European countries it is published about it, both in newspapers and on television. This is a recent example:

The different damages that quinolones can cause are supported by scientific studies. Basically, due to their mechanism of action, they are more of a chemotherapy drug than an antibiotic.

Thus, they inhibit toposoimerase II, among many other things, and this damages the mitochondria (cellular organelles responsible for supplying most of the energy necessary for cellular activity) and the cells not being able to regenerate properly.

Well, in England they have further strengthened the restrictions on use due to the serious long-lasting effects that these antibiotics produce. Over there should only be given when no other antibiotic is appropriate.

And in our neighboring country, France, the agency that controls medicines is collaborating with the Damaged Association by Fluoroquinolones.

However, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) carried out a study after the restrictions that were imposed in 2018 to try to avoid off-label prescriptions of these dangerous medications. Spain has the worst damage notification figures.

Following this analysis, the EMA published a reminder for doctors about the serious and potentially irreversible harms of fluoroquinolones.

And it had to be the president of the French association of those affected who reminded the AEMPS for months that it had to get involved in report damage because it was the only country that did not publish the reminder.

As several people affected in our country remember:

As if this were not enough, the Spanish Agency is lying; although he finally posted that reminder says that they have done a “questionnaire” to the doctors and that they are widely aware of the serious effects of these antibiotics.

But those of us affected suffer the constant denial of its effects by the medical class.

Affected by fluoroquinolones in Spain.

An existing problem is that there are many people nor do they know that they are affected by fluoroquinolones because most of the damage they cause is not immediate after taking it. It’s not like with others
medications, whose damage is immediately visible.

Many do not connect the dots and are diagnosed with diseases of unknown etiopathogenesis such as fibromyalgia. «The problem is that here we are very few aware«, these damaged people conclude.

If you have any problems with these treatments contact ADAF, the Association of People Affected by Drugs.
