The US Treasury has decided not to impose personal sanctions on Alina Kabayeva, who is considered to be Vladimir Putin’s partner, despite the suspicion that she is helping to hide the Russian president’s capital, for fear that Putin’s reaction will escalate tensions.

The name of Kabayeva, 38, a former Olympic gymnast who won an Olympic gold medal and a model has been associated with President Putin for years while he was married to his wife, but Putin has never admitted personal contact with her and the Kremlin has denied any personal relationship. However, the US estimates that she is his spouse and that they have four children in common.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the US Treasury Department has decided not to impose personal sanctions on Alina Kabayeva, who is considered to be Vladimir Putin’s partner, despite the suspicion that she is helping to hide the Russian president’s capital, for fear that Putin’s reaction will escalate tensions.

According to shadow officials in the US administration, Kabayeva’s name has appeared on the sanctions lists drawn up by the Treasury in recent weeks on the circle close to the Kremlin, including the president’s two daughters, in an attempt to pressure Putin to end the war in Ukraine and withdraw from the country. At the last minute, however, the National Security Council decided not to put it on the final list for fear “it would be a personal blow for Putin that could escalate tensions between the US and Russia.”

According to the report, there is still a possibility that Kabayeva will bear personal responsibility and be the target of personal sanctions, including a freeze on US assets, a ban on business ties with American personalities and institutions and even a ban on entering the US. Days will tell where the affair will develop.
