Former Olympique Lyonnais midfielder and captain Maxime Gonalons, who has been without a club since leaving Clermont this summer, has announced that he will end his career at the age of 35. “To all of you, my teammates, coaches, staff and all the fans, thank you for this unforgettable journey,” the former national team midfielder (8 caps) wrote on his Instagram account on Tuesday 16 October. “Today I close this chapter with the feeling of having given everything. Football will always remain a part of me and even if I leave the field I will always remain a lover of this sport. Originally from Vénissieux (Rhone), Gonalons has expressed a strong affection for OL, with whom he lived his best moments, from 2009 to 2017, after passing through their training center. “I will never forget these years spent defending your colours, you will remain forever in my heart”, he wrote, before also mentioning his matches with the Blues shirt, “a child’s dream”, between 2011 and 2015. Maxime Gonalons played more than 300 games for OL, featuring in several European campaigns, including a Champions League semi-final in 2010 against Bayern Munich.
