The Public Prosecution ordered the imprisonment of a new leader within the armed group that controlled the city of Tarhuna before 2020, in reference to the Al-Kani militia.
The prosecution said in a publication that the accused confessed to committing 12 murders after joining that group in 2016.
In July of this year, the Public Prosecutor ordered the imprisonment of a leader affiliated with the Al-Kani militia, on charges of excessive loss of life and violating the rights of some Tarhuna residents, after he confessed to committing 22 murders after joining that group, and the investigator decided to detain him pending investigation.
Last June, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that the Tripoli Criminal Court had issued a death sentence for a member of the Al-Kani militia, by firing squad, for his involvement in serious violations that affected the rights of some residents, and the charge of killing a citizen was proven, according to the office.
The International Criminal Court had previously issued 6 international arrest warrants for those involved in the crimes committed in Tarhuna during the control of the Al-Kani militia, and they are: Abdul Rahim Al-Kani, Makhlouf Douma, Muhammad Al-Salihin, Nasser Muftah Daw, Fathi Al-Zenkal, and Abdul-Bari Al-Shaqaqi.
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, said that lifting the confidentiality of the six arrest warrants issued against those wanted in the Tarhuna crimes represents an important moment in the collective efforts to achieve justice and accountability for crimes committed in Libya.
