/ The Brazilian club Santos lost by two goals to one, at dawn on Thursday, in the local football league championship, relegating to the second division for the first time in its history extending for about 111 years.

The team that produced the legend Pele and the current captain of the Brazilian national team, Neymar Jr., conceded a goal in the 96th minute of the match against Fortaleza, ending the season in 17th place with 43 points from 38 matches.

Mario Sergio scored the first goal for Fortaleza in the 39th minute of the match, before Messias equalized for Santos in the 58th minute, restoring hope of survival to the club, in light of its rivals Vasco da Gama and Bahia playing two matches against Bragantino and Atletico Mineiro.

But with Santos pressing to score a second goal to ensure avoiding a disaster that the club has not witnessed since its founding, Fortaleza player Juan Martin scored a goal in the 96th minute of the match.

The Associated Press reported that the club’s angry fans tried to storm the match field and forced the players to quickly run towards the locker rooms.

Santos finished the season with 43 points, one point behind Bahia, who beat Atletico Mineiro by four to one, and two points behind Vasco da Gama, who won by two goals to one, in another difficult match against Bragantino, in the last week of this year’s Brazilian league championship.

With the relegation of Santos, Flamengo and Sao Paulo become the only two teams that have not been relegated to the second division in Brazil throughout their history.

Palmeiras Club won the championship title, after tying with Cruzeiro with a goal for each team, adding the 12th championship in the club’s history.

The team’s only goal during the match was scored by 18-year-old Endrek, before Nikau scored the equalizer in the 80th minute of the match.

Palmeiras finished the season with 70 points, Gremio came in second place with 68 points, and both Mineiro and Flamengo were in third and fourth place with 66 points.
