Former Changnyeong WFC coach Shin Sang-woo appointed as head coach of women’s national soccer team

Coach Shin Sang-woo (48), who previously led Changnyeong FC in the WK League, was appointed as the new head coach of the women’s national soccer team.

The Korea Football Association announced on the 10th, “Coach Shin Sang-woo has been appointed as the head coach of the women’s national team, which has been vacant since the contract with coach Colin Bell ended in June.”

The contract period runs until the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and an interim evaluation will be made through the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Coach Shin Sang-woo, who graduated from Kwangwoon University, played for Daejeon Citizen (now Daejeon Hana Citizen) and Seongnam Ilhwa (now Seongnam FC) before beginning his career as a coach at Gimhae City Hall in the National League.

In 2015, he moved to the women’s soccer stage and served as coach of Boeun Sangmu (currently Mungyeong Sangmu), and served as the head coach of Icheon Bridge (2017) and Changnyeong WFC.

In 2022, he returned to men’s soccer and contributed to the team’s K-League 2 championship as Gimcheon executive coach.

Last August, the newly formed National Team Strengthening Committee reviewed 30 candidates through three meetings to select the women’s national team coach and then selected five final candidates.

Coach Shin Sang-woo, who received the first recommendation, received approval through a written resolution from the board of directors and signed a contract with the Football Association.

Choi Young-il, Chairman of the Strengthening Committee, said, “Coach Shin Sang-woo has a firm soccer philosophy regarding team composition and game model. He explained the background for the recommendation, saying, “We also highly evaluated his experience as a leader in the WK League, experience in promotion to the K League, and experience leading top teams in K League 1.”

Coach Shin Sang-woo’s debut match will be a friendly match against the Japanese women’s national team held at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan on the 26th.

The list of players for the trip to Japan will be announced on the 14th.
