Former Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang died after suffering a heart attack, state media announced this Friday (27).

“Li suffered a sudden heart attack and died at 12:10 am after all rescue attempts failed,” Xinhua news agency reported. He was 68 years old.

Li was a career official who spoke fluent English and supported economic reforms when he was prime minister during President Xi Jinping’s first two five-year terms. But he saw his projects in this area being hampered by Xi’s growing authority.

Li was praised for helping the country emerge from the global financial crisis relatively unscathed, but his tenure was also marked by a dramatic shift in power in China from a consensus-based regime associated with former president Hu Jintao and his predecessors, Xi Jinping’s omnipotence.
