New Delhi: Former Delhi University (DU) professor GN Saibaba passed away on Saturday. He was admitted to the hospital due to deteriorating health. He died during treatment in the government hospital. Saibaba was more than 50 years old. The official said that Saibaba breathed his last at around 9 pm on Saturday night. Saibaba was suffering from gall bladder infection and other health issues. Due to this he died.

Spent 10 years in jail, released seven months early

GN Saibaba was acquitted just seven months ago, after spending 10 years in jail in a case over alleged Maoist links. In March this year, the Bombay High Court had acquitted Saibaba in the case of alleged links with Maoists. The court had said that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against him.

Former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba died in hospital on Saturday due to ill health. The Maharashtra Police had accused him of having links with the banned CPI-Maoist, but he was later acquitted by the Bombay High Court. Saibaba, an English professor at DU, was suspended from the college in 2014 after he was arrested by Maharashtra Police on suspicion of having links with Maoist groups.

Saibaba acquitted on the orders of Bombay High Court

After his arrest, Saibaba was imprisoned in Nagpur Central Jail. In March 2017, a sessions court in Maharashtra had found Saibaba and five others – Mahesh Tirkey, Pandu Narote, Hem Mishra, Prashant Rahi and Vijay Tirkey guilty of alleged Maoist links and involvement in activities waging war against the nation. Earlier this year, he was released after being acquitted by the Bombay High Court.
