As of mid-February 2023, Carter was in hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter died peacefully at his home in Plains, surrounded by family, the Carter Center said in a statement.
Carter was the longest-lived US president, which seemed unlikely back in 2015 when he revealed he had brain cancer.
In his only term in office, Carter, a Democrat, focused on human rights and social justice, and in his first two years had good results, including a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, dubbed the Camp David Accords.
However, his administration faced many difficulties – the most serious of which was the taking of US hostages in Iran and the disastrously failed attempt to rescue 52 captured Americans in 1980. He was also criticized for his handling of the oil crisis.
He founded the Carter Center in 1982 to implement his vision of world diplomacy and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his tireless efforts to promote social and economic justice.
He observed many elections around the world and became a prominent international mediator on global issues from North Korea to Bosnia.
US President Joe Biden has declared January 9 a national day of mourning.
