Mexico Braces for Extreme Weather: Snowfall, Frost, and Flooding Threaten Multiple States
Table of Contents
A rare combination of weather systems is poised to bring extreme conditions to Mexico, with the potential for snowfall in northern mountain ranges, widespread frosts, and heavy rainfall across much of the country. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued warnings urging residents to take precautions as Cold Front 15 remains stationary and a new winter front approaches.
The approaching weather systems represent an unusual early-season threat. For the first time this season, conditions are favorable for snowfall and sleet in various mountain ranges across northern Mexico, according to the SMN. This is compounded by the advance of Cold front 15, accompanied by a polar trough and an atmospheric river, creating a volatile meteorological situation.
Widespread Frosts and Sub-Zero Temperatures Expected
Experts from the SMN and the Government of Mexico are warning of a significant temperature drop that could lead to widespread frosts, extending from the northern border all the way to central Mexico. Minimum temperatures are forecast to plummet to as low as -10 °C during dawn in several states.
The areas at highest risk of severe frost include:
- Baja california
- Sonora
- Chihuahua
- Durango
- Zacatecas
- State of Mexico
- Tlaxcala
- Puebla
- Mountain regions of Coahuila
- Nuevo León
- Guanajuato
- Querétaro
- Hidalgo
- Veracruz
The wind chill is expected to exacerbate the cold, making conditions feel even more frigid, particularly on the North Table and the Central Table.
Heavy Rainfall and flood Risk intensify
Along with the extreme cold, the SMN warns that persistent humidity flowing in from the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea will generate frequent rainfall across the west, center, south, and southeast of the country.States such as Guerrero, Chiapas, Veracruz, and Coahuila are expected to experience heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and possible hail.
“The heavy rains could cause flooding and inundation in urban areas,” a senior official stated, urging the population to exercise extreme caution. Authorities are emphasizing the need for preventive measures against floods, landslides, and rising river levels, especially in mountainous regions.
Atmospheric Instability and Potential for Severe Weather
According to agency specialists, atmospheric conditions will favor not only snow and sleet but also strong gusts of wind capable of generating dust devils and possible whirlwinds. The clash of cold air masses and humidity is creating an unstable surroundings, increasing the risk of severe weather events.
The SMN detailed that Cold Front 15 will remain stationary in the northeast while the new winter front enters Baja California, generating a clash of cold masses and humidity. This will cause an increase in rain, intense winds and a greater probability of snowfall in mountainous areas.
Civil defense authorities have urged the population to stay informed and take extreme precautions during the next few hours as the combined effects of these weather systems unfold. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports and heed any warnings or instructions issued by emergency management officials.
