The average price of fuel has increased for the first time in three months since 2024, after accumulating drops since the end of September and ending the year with a 15% reduction in price.

Specifically, the average price of a liter of gasoline has ended this first week of the year with a streak of thirteen consecutive decreases after increasing in price by 0.19%, to stand at 1.534 euros, according to data from the European Union Petroleum Bulletin.

For its part, diesel puts an end to twelve consecutive weeks of decline after rising 0.07% compared to the previous week, reaching the average price of 1.493 euros per liter.

In this way, both fuels They cut a downward spiral that had led them to accumulate a decrease in the price of almost 15%, in the case of gasoline, and more than 13%, for diesel.

Gasoline below pre-war Ukraine.

Despite this slight rebound, the price of a liter of gasoline remains below the levels it was at before the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine -1,592 euros per liter-, which began on February 24, 2022. In the case of diesel, it is still above the price then -1,479 euros per liter-.

Furthermore, both fuels remain far from the highs recorded in the summer of 2022, in July, when gasoline reached 2,141 euros and diesel 2.1 euros.

The gasoline tank, 3 euros more expensive than in 2022

With current prices, filling an average 55-liter tank of gasoline costs 84.37 euros, almost three euros more than at the same time last year, when it amounted to about 81.4 euros, when the discount of 20 cents per liter that was in force for much of 2022.

For diesel vehicles, filling an average tank (55 liters) involves an outlay of 82.11 euros, about 8 euros more than in the same period of 2023, when the price was 74 euros.

Likewise, with this, diesel has been below the price of gasoline for 45 consecutive weeks. It thus remains in the usual situation prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which caused the price of diesel to be more expensive than that of gasoline continuously from August 2022 to mid-February 2023, when the dynamic was broken.

The price of fuel depends on multiple factors, such as its specific price (independent of that of oil), the evolution of crude oil, taxes, the cost of raw materials and logistics, and gross margins. Furthermore, the evolution in the price of crude oil is not directly transferred to fuel prices, but rather does so with a time lag.
