Because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the Group of Seven major industrial nations (G7) wants to cut Russian income from diamond exports. At the beginning of 2024, the G7 will restrict the import of rough diamonds that were mined or processed in Russia. The heads of state and government decided this on Wednesday in an online meeting under the Japanese chairmanship. In addition to host Japan, the G7 countries also include Germany, France, Italy, Canada, the USA and Great Britain.

In March 2024, the restrictions should also be extended to the import of Russian diamonds via third countries, it said in the final declaration. The third step is an origin control for rough diamonds from September 2024 in the G7 countries that trade a lot in such stones. The EU is also planning punitive measures against the Russian diamond trade in its upcoming sanctions package.

The G7 states promised further support for Ukraine. They also agreed to further restrict Russia’s revenue from energy supplies. Greater care should be taken to ensure that Russia does not receive any technology that can be used by its military.

The group condemned Russian airstrikes to destroy Ukraine’s energy supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj was present and said that his country hoped to get through this winter with less damage than last thanks to improved anti-aircraft defenses. “We have the chance to win the battle for energy this winter,” he said, according to his presidential office.
