Military seizes power in coup d’état in Gabon

This Wednesday (30), a group of military personnel from Gabon, a country in Central Africa, announced a coup
broadcast on national television. At the time, they also claimed to have dissolved all democratic institutions in the country and annulled the presidential elections that re-elected Ali Bongo Ondimba last Saturday (26) for a third term.

In a speech, they claimed that fraud
in the general elections. Bongo, who has been in power for 14 years, was placed under house arrest, said the high-ranking group of the Armed Forces, which also said it had closed the country’s borders “until further notice”.

The announcement was made by a group of around 12 military personnel, justifying the action due to an “irresponsible and unpredictable government, which results in a continuous deterioration of social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos.”

The soldier who read the speech said he spoke on behalf of an “Institutional Transition and Restoration Committee”. According to the news agency AFP
during the broadcast, it was possible to hear shots from automatic machine guns in the country’s capital, Libreville.

“In the name of the Gabonese people, we have decided to defend peace and put an end to the current regime,” the military said.

Ali Bongo Ondimba had been re-elected with around 64% of the votes, according to Gabon’s electoral authority. The president’s family governed the country for 56 years, almost the entire period post-independence.
