Former Mexican Security Minister Genaro García Luna has appealed the verdict and sentence handed down in the Eastern District Court of New York, where he was found guilty of drug trafficking and making false statements.
This Wednesday, the appeal motion, dated October 18, was formally announced, challenging both the sentence and the verdict issued against him.
On October 16, Judge Brian Cogan sentenced García Luna to 38 years and 8 months in prison on five counts, including four counts of drug trafficking and one count of lying in his statement when applying for US citizenship in 2018. Additionally, Cogan imposed a $2 million fine for one of the charges and five years of probation as part of the sentence.
García Luna was found guilty of “aiding the Sinaloa Cartel for a decade in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes.”
Judge Cogan described the former Mexican official as someone who led “a double life,” noting that despite his respectable appearance, his behavior was similar to that of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Despite the seriousness of the charges, the judge chose not to sentence him to life in prison, arguing that he wanted to offer him “a light at the end of the tunnel” and recognizing his work in prison, where he dedicated himself to teaching other inmates.
