ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia receiver Colbie Young was arrested early Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child, according to the Athens-Clarke County jail website.

Young was booked at 4:18 a.m., with bond set at $2,500, and remained in jail as of four hours later.

“This is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time,” Georgia associate athletic director Steven Drummond said in a statement.

According to the arrest report, the complainant, who described herself as Young’s ex-girlfriend, came to his apartment around midnight to discuss the status of their relationship and was there about 20 minutes. The conversation turned heated “after she found out he was on the phone with another woman.” The complainant told police that Young then grabbed her by the arm and pulled her out of the room. Young then returned to his bedroom, closed the door and locked it.

Young re-emerged from the room when the woman received a phone call and answered it. The woman told police that Young then “picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard.”

The police officer reported that the woman “had a bruise and discoloration on the bottom right side of her chest where it meets the abdomen. She also had redness on her right flank. No injuries were noted on the arm where she said Mr. Young grabbed her.”

The woman declined to be transported by ambulance to the hospital, but agreed to go if the officer transported her.

The officer then went to see Young at his apartment. He confirmed the heated argument but denied ever grabbing the woman, and when asked how she received the injuries “told me it wasn’t from him.”

“Colbie Young was arrested last night after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment,” Kim Stephens, Young’s attorney, said in a statement. “He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could ever be considered a crime. I expect Mr. Young to be fully exonerated once our investigation is complete and the truth revealed.”

Young, a senior, transferred from Miami after last season. He is the second transfer receiver in recent years to be arrested shortly after joining the program: Rara Thomas was arrested on misdemeanor battery charges in January 2023, within a month after transferring from Mississippi State. He remained on the team after taking a plea deal, but was dismissed this summer after another arrest for battery.
