The strictly religious German family emigrated to the USA 15 years ago. They wanted to homeschool the children to keep them away from topics like abortion. The USA tolerated them – now they are threatened with deportation to Germany.

The request for “self-deportation” came as a surprise to Hannelore and Uwe Romeike. The strictly religious couple, who emigrated from Bissingen an der Teck to the United States in 2008 with their then five children, appeared four weeks ago for a routine appointment with the American Immigration Service (ICE) in their adopted home of Tennessee.

“There the Romeikes were told that the toleration that had been issued after their asylum application was rejected had been revoked. The authority did not give a reason,” says Kevin Boden, lawyer and spokesman for the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), to the FAZ
