Many people in Germany are afraid ⁣of serious illnesses. This is shown by a current survey.⁣ Corona, however,⁤ hardly plays a role anymore.

Germans’ fear of serious illnesses such as⁤ cancer, dementia or stroke⁣ has⁣ risen to ⁢its highest level in the past 15 ⁢years. This is ‍the result of a ‍representative‌ survey by ⁤the Forsa Institute on behalf⁣ of DAK-Gesundheit, which the ⁣health insurance company has ⁤been carrying out regularly since 2010.

The fear of mental illness has increased considerably again among 14 to 29 year olds. ⁢More than half‍ fear that⁢ they will suffer from depression or burnout. In view of the ongoing⁣ pressure to succeed⁣ at school, university‌ or work,an increasing culture of comparison on social media and the constant ⁤presence of crises and wars, young adults ⁢in particular are exposed to a ‌lot of pressure, said DAK CEO Andreas⁤ Storm. “but mental illnesses⁣ are ‌still a taboo topic. We‍ have‍ to take fears seriously and put strengthening mental health on the agenda.”

On average, 36 percent of Germans fear mental illness. Among⁣ 14 to 29 year olds ‌it is indeed 54 percent,⁣ nine percentage‌ points more than‍ in the previous year. This fear occurs least frequently in people over 60‍ at 19 percent.

In the current study, 73 percent of those surveyed said they were most afraid of a malignant tumor. Last year⁣ it was 65‌ percent. The number of those most afraid of dementia or Alzheimer’s rose from 45 to 55‍ percent. 52 percent, eleven percentage points ‌more than ‍last year, are afraid of a stroke. This is followed by ⁣fear ‍of ‌accidents ⁤with serious injuries (50 percent) and heart attacks (42 percent). Corona, conversely, only plays a subordinate role in Germans’ awareness of illness. Only 10 percent of those surveyed are still‌ afraid of it -⁤ at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020‌ it was⁣ 37 percent.

According to the survey, the majority of⁣ germans feel ⁣healthy (87⁢ percent) and rate their⁢ health as good (56 ⁤percent) or very good (31 percent). ‍62 percent of those surveyed‍ took advantage of offers for early ⁤cancer detection – four percentage‌ points more than in the previous year.
