Germany: Merkel intervened in the election campaign

by time news

The election campaign in Germany entered a new round. According to the poll of the institute Forsa 46% of Germans do not want to see any of the three candidates as chancellor.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who, as you know, for the first time in 16 years does not run in elections, and therefore still tried to stay above the fight, for the first time actively intervened in the election campaign. Things are going so badly for her native Christian Democratic Union (Merkel resigned as head of the CDU in 2018, but remains the face of the party) that she resorted to open campaigning in the Bundestag, which met for the final plenary session before the elections on September 26. Frau Merkel, who, apparently, last appeared within the walls of parliament as head of government, did not waste time and immediately “went on the offensive in her final speech,” Spiegel online reports.

According to Merkel, she “does not care” at all who will run Germany. She believes that the Germans will have to choose between a revolutionary turn towards the government of the Social Democrats and the Greens, who are ready to take the Left as allies, and the predictability of the current course. “We are talking about firm decisions in the economy and tax policy, about the number of jobs … The best way for our country is a federal government under the leadership of the CDU / CSU with Armin Laschet as chancellor … I’m just telling the truth”, – without Merkel said bluntly.

The leader of the Social Democratic faction in the Bundestag, Rolf Mutzenich, expressed regret that she used the parliamentary rostrum for such an outspoken campaign advertisement for the CDU candidate. “I am very sorry that the Federal Chancellor subordinated her cabinet to the election campaign,” the politician said in an interview with RTL TV channel. Merkel also previously supported Laschet, touring North Rhine-Westphalia, which suffered from the July floods (he has been the prime minister of the region since 2017).

In turn, the candidate for Chancellor from the Social Democratic Party, Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Merkel, Olaf Scholz, speaking at the “Pre-election arena” of the ARD TV channel, announced his “main goal” – to send Christian Democrats into opposition. They say, there they will be able to “rest”, recuperate. “I got the impression that many citizens want the same,” Scholz said.

Thus, he publicly ruled out all options for a coalition with the Merkel party, including the current grand coalition. But the politician does admit a sensational alliance with the “Left”. True, post-communists from the former GDR are in favor of the dissolution of NATO and a revision of the transatlantic partnership with the United States. However, Scholz assures that he will not allow this, even if the extreme left gets into the German federal government for the first time in history.

In the meantime, a fresh new poll of the Forsa institute for the “politbarometer” RTL arrived in time. The CDU / CSU rating fell by another two percentage points – to 19%. This is slightly more than the Greens (17%). The Social Democratic Party of Germany remains the undisputed leader of the race – 25% of those polled are ready to support it. Laschet’s personal rating is still worse than that of his party. If direct elections of the chancellor were possible in Germany, only 9% of Germans would vote for the head of the CDU. For the leader of the Greens, Annalena Berbock – 15%, for Scholz – 30%. At the same time, 46% of Germans do not want to see any of the three candidates as chancellor.
