Germany: Payments for the care of a mother living abroad

by time news

─ Good afternoon, employees of the column “I have the right”.

Please tell me how best to act in my difficult situation. I live in Germany, I have permanent residence, I work. My mother lives in Russia and is sick. After the operation, she needs care.

Is there a special parental leave at work to take care of a close relative, or should you take regular leave? Are there any days set? Maybe compensation for their costs? Can I deduct my costs from taxes?

Thanks in advance!

Olga R., Hanau.

─ Dear Olga,

Sooner or later, each of us is faced with the problem of caring for elderly parents. German law (Gesetz über Pflegezeit) provides for the possibility for a period of up to six months, in whole or in part, to be exempted from work duties in order to care for a sick relative or relative. The possibility of leaving also extends to relatives living abroad. At the same time, care must take place at home, and the health status of a relative in need of care must correspond to health group 1 (sog. Pflegegrad I). You will need to prepare a health certificate for your mother, which will be recognized in Germany.

However, we draw your attention to the fact that you can demand release from work only if your company employs more than 15 employees. In small businesses, workers should look for other options for taking off work.

While caring for your mother, you have the right to apply for an interest-free loan provided by the Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben.
