Germany is not obliged to pay compensation if the regulator decides that Nord Stream 2 does not comply with EU and German law. This was stated by the Minister of Economics, Vice-Chancellor of Germany Robert Habek.

“Currently, the Federal Grid Agency has suspended the certification procedure. If it is renewed, this procedure will have to decide whether the conditions for approval are met in accordance with German and European regulations. And if this is not the case, then no compensation is due, ”the politician said in an interview with Spiegel.

In November, Germany suspended the certification process for Nord Stream 2 AG as a pipeline operator. The German regulator said that a decision on certification would not be made until the second half of 2022.

During a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, his counterpart from Germany, Annalena Burbock, said that the use of energy as a weapon would have consequences, including Nord Stream 2.
