Pathanamthitta: A Pathanamthitta pox court has sentenced Rajeev alias Rajeev (35) to 60 years imprisonment in Achankovil Girijan Colony for raping a minor girl and making her pregnant. Pox Act 5 (1) carries a maximum sentence of 30 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh, while Section 5 (n) carries a maximum sentence of 30 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. If the fine is not paid, he faces an additional one year in prison.

As long as the sentence is served together, the sentence of 30 years’ rigorous imprisonment will expire. The verdict was handed down by Poxo Court Judge Jayakumar John. The incident related to the case took place in 2015. The accused had allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl while she was staying at a relative’s house in Kokathottu when she came to Konni from Achankovil in search of work.

The girl, who had shifted to a hostel for education, was found to be pregnant when she sought treatment for abdominal pain. Following the information provided by the hospital authorities, the police arrested the accused who recorded the statement of the girl. Jason Mathews appeared for the prosecution. The investigation was completed by R. Jose, a former Konni police inspector.
