Goheung-gun held an unveiling ceremony and memorial service for the ‘Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Goheung-gun Memorial Tower’. On the 18th, Goheung-gun (Governor Gong Young-min) installed a Goheung-gun memorial cenotaph 76 years after the ‘Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident’ and held an unveiling ceremony and memorial service.
This memorial service was held in the plaza in front of the Goheung County Citizens’ Center, and was attended by over 100 bereaved family members, including Mayor Gong Young-min, County Council Chairman Ryu Je-dong, Provincial Councilors Song Hyeong-gon and Park Seon-joon, Goheung Police Chief, and Lee Baek-in, head of the Goheung Bereaved Families Association. Prior to the full-scale memorial event on this day, the unveiling ceremony of the ‘Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident Goheung-gun Memorial Cenotaph’ was held to heal the pain of the victims and their bereaved families and soothe the souls of the departed souls, and flower laying, incense burning, and memorial performances were also held.
Although there were many victims in Goheung-gun, including Yeosu and Suncheon, there was a great disappointment in the absence of a memorial tower. To resolve this regret, the memorial cenotaph was created in the shape of a camellia flower, and a dove, a symbol of peace, is climbing on the petals to express peace and the victims. As a result, the first memorial tower in Goheung-gun for the October 19 incident in Yeosun was built.
County Governor Gong Young-min said, “We will do our best to ensure that the honor of the victims is uprighted through fact-finding and truth-finding, and that appropriate compensation is provided to the victims’ families who live in pain every day.”
In addition, “This memorial tower is not just a memorial tower, but a symbol of reconciliation and coexistence, as well as a symbol of promise that reminds us of our tragic history and pledges to never repeat such pain.” He added, “This memorial service was successful in comforting the victims of the Yeosun incident and creating a memorial space to reflect on its historical significance.”
A military official said, “We have been accepting applications for living expenses for the survivors of the Yeo-Sun incident at each town/myeon office since October 6, and we will do our best to ensure that the living expenses for the survivors are paid.”
Meanwhile, Goheung-gun is promoting various policies to make integrity and kindness a brand of Goheung-gun, and on the 17th, a campaign was held for its public officials called ‘Integrity in 2024!’ The ‘Challenge Golden Bell’ (hereinafter referred to as Golden Bell) event was held.
This Golden Bell event was held in the form of a quiz on anti-corruption laws such as the Integrity Policy, Anti-Graft Act, Conflict of Interest Prevention Act, and Code of Conduct for Public Officials, as well as various areas of integrity common sense. It was planned as an experiential method that public officials could participate in in a friendly way and easily understand, in an attempt to increase the effectiveness of the integrity policy.
In particular, in this event, which was organized to strengthen teamwork and strengthen harmony and horizontal communication between public officials, County Governor Gong Young-min personally participated to encourage public officials and raised interest in integrity policies by presenting final questions.
As a follow-up event, a public official unity event was held hosted by Goheung-gun, Goheung-gun Council, public servants’ union, and public solidarity, providing an opportunity for Goheung-gun’s public service community to become one through communication and harmony.
County Mayor Gong Young-min said, “Public officials’ passion for integrity and their unity are a great source of energy in creating a healthy public service culture.” He added, “This event is a place for communication and empathy to create a clean environment, and all public officials will continue to work together as one.” “I hope you will work hard to promote integrity,” he said.
