Google’s Halloween Doodle Revives Pac-Man with Spooky Twist
Google is celebrating the Halloween season and the enduring legacy of Pac-Man with a new, interactive Google Doodle featuring the iconic arcade game. The spooky-themed version, available on computers and other devices, offers a nostalgic trip for those who grew up in the 1980s and a fun challenge for a new generation of gamers.
The reimagined game marks a milestone – or at least, a perceived one – with the celebration of Pac-Man’s 45th anniversary. However, the realization of this anniversary prompted one observer to wryly note the passage of time. “It cannot be true, because that would mean I am no longer 12 years old,” they confessed, before quickly retracting the thought.
The Halloween Doodle introduces several playful changes to the classic formula. Pac-Man himself appears in a variety of Halloween costumes, and the traditional power pellets have been replaced with unsettling bloodshot eyeballs. Players are encouraged to repeatedly refresh the page, as Pac-Man cycles through different outfits, potentially sourced from retailers like Spirit Halloween.
The Doodle features a total of eight levels, with four presenting unique, haunted-house mazes. According to Google, “Pay close attention inside each house, as its design directly reflects the personality of the iconic ghost haunting it.” Despite the allure, completing even a single level proved challenging for some. “Eight levels? I didn’t even finish one!” one player admitted.
Gameplay differs depending on the device. While navigating the maze requires using arrow keys on a desktop computer, a colleague at CNET found the experience significantly easier on mobile devices. “On a phone or iPad, the Pac-Man doodle just needs you to move your finger on the touchscreen,” they reported. “Much better!”
The tradition of Google Doodles began in 1998 when Google’s co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, playfully altered the search engine logo with a stick-figure drawing to signal their attendance at Burning Man. Since then, Doodles have evolved into elaborate tributes, commemorating everything from space missions to the invention of the barcode, often incorporating interactive elements like games. This isn’t Pac-Man’s first foray into the Doodle universe; the game received a similar treatment in 2010 for its 30th anniversary.
