Government extended the ceasefire with the dissidents of alias ‘Calarcá’

The Government of Colombia has announced the extension of the ceasefire with various FARC dissident structures, reaffirming the ongoing peace process.

According to decree 1280 signed by President Gustavo Petro Urrego and the Minister of Defense, Iván Velásquez Gómezthe measure will be in force from 00:00 on October 16, 2024 until 00:00 on April 15, 2025.

This ceasefire includes the structures of the General Staff of the Commander Jorge Suárez Briceño, Commander Gentil Duarte del Magdalena Medio, and the Raúl Reyes front blocks. These groups, which continue at the peace dialogue table, maintain their commitment to a negotiated solution to the armed conflict, which reinforces the hope of significant progress towards the pacification of the country.

The ceasefire, which lasts six months, is based on the protection of the civilian populationthe promotion of territorial transformations, the fight against illicit economies, the preservation of the environment and the active participation of society in the peace process. With this measure, the government seeks to strengthen the necessary conditions for lasting peace, in addition to providing greater security in areas historically affected by the conflict.

Despite the suspension of offensive military operations and special police operations, the decree makes it clear that the Public Force will continue to fulfill its constitutional duty to guarantee the integrity of the national territory and preserve the constitutional order. Likewise, it is emphasized that actions directed against illegal economies will not stop, which includes operations against drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
