Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said, agriculture will not improve if the farmer does not improve. If agriculture does not improve, the country will not improve. The government is working on the improvement of agriculture.
He said these things to reporters after visiting the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in Gazipur on Tuesday (October 8).
The advisor said, during the war of independence, our population was only 7 crores. Now the population has increased, but the cultivable land has not increased. This land is producing food for more than 17 crore people of the country. It should be remembered that this agricultural sector plays the most important role for the country. The government is working earnestly in the proper evaluation of this sector.
Regarding the rehabilitation of farmers affected by the recent floods, the advisor said that seeds, saplings and cash have been sent to the farmers in the flood-affected areas recently. In places where paddy has been damaged, Aman seedlings have been produced from other places. Aman paddy cannot be sown after 22nd. Work is being done on how to cultivate mustard and other crops in those areas.
He said, this time there is a problem with the flood. Flooding has all the disadvantages, but it brings benefits, silt to the soil. This time the flood brought sand along with the silt. Almonds can be cultivated as sand comes with silt.
In response to a question about the market syndicate, the agricultural adviser said, efforts are being made to control the market. I think the market will come to bearable level very soon. If there is a syndicate, it will be broken up by the Ministry of Commerce.
In response to questions from reporters about the upcoming Durga Puja, the adviser said there is no fear about Durga Puja. This year’s puja will be very good. There will be no problem. I want your help for that. Every time there are police and Ansar members, this time additional RAB, BGB, army, navy and air force have also been deployed.
