GREAT TEACHERS
Online art course “Great Masters” of modern and contemporary art, held by Susana Blas at the Guggenheim in Bilbao.
This course claims the role of some artists as “Great Masters”, explaining in detail the reasons and aspects why they stood out in a unique way. The title takes inspiration from the expression “Great Masters”, traditionally used to encompass figures in the history of art who were characterized by their virtuosity. Taught by Susana Blas, contemporary art historian and specialist in art and feminism, this proposal complements the online course From invisible to protagonists: 20th and 21st century female artists you should know.
Features of it:
Dedication: 6 hours, at your own pace
Audience: adults, interested in contemporary art
Spanish
Access: via online platform
4 modules, 16 video lessons and additional materials
Certification: automatic, at the end of the course.
What will we learn?
1. The role of women in the history of art and above all that of a selection of creators whose work represented a turning point in the development of modern and contemporary art.
2. The true artistic contributions of these creators and their place in the history of 20th and 21st century art.
3. The driving and pioneering role of these creators in certain artistic manifestations, challenging social challenges and impositions.
4. Connecting these artists to differentiating and genuine narratives and concepts, rather than simply technical issues.
Plan
Module I: Spirituality
Focused on artists most closely linked to movements such as spiritualism, anthroposophy, dowsing and Taoism; and in others simply more linked to the place and its natural environment.
Module II: Advertising
It addresses the work of artists who have acquired a political and ideological commitment, both in defense of their ideals and as an act of denunciation.
Module III: Feedback
The protagonists of this module are the artists whose creative process and whose work is the result of a constant circulation of energy and information, intellectual, telluric, theatrical or mental.
Module IV: Equality
The work of female artists who challenge social challenges and impositions from an egalitarian, conflictual or delicate perspective is analyzed.

What topics will be covered in Susana Blas’s online art course “Great Masters”?
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Susana Blas: Uncovering the “Great Masters” of Modern and Contemporary Art
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, Susana! We’re excited to have you here to discuss your upcoming online art course, “Great Masters” at the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Can you share what inspired you to develop this course?
Susana Blas (SB): Thank you for having me! The inspiration for this course came from my ongoing passion for modern and contemporary art, particularly the underrepresentation of women in the historical narrative. I wanted to shed light on those ”Great Masters”—not just the well-known figures, but also the remarkable women who have significantly influenced art over the past century.
TNE: That’s fascinating! In your experience, what misconceptions do people have about the contributions of contemporary female artists?
SB: One of the biggest misconceptions is that women artists simply weren’t present or relevant in the modern art scene. This course aims to debunk that myth by highlighting the work and impact of female artists who have been pioneers in their fields. From their unique perspectives to their innovative techniques, these women have played vital roles in shaping art as we know it.
TNE: You’ve designed the course to be accessible for adults interested in contemporary art, but can you elaborate on what participants will specifically learn?
SB: Of course! The course is structured into four modules consisting of 16 video lessons. Participants will explore the vital role of women in art history, focusing on those creators who marked pivotal turning points in the development of modern and contemporary art. We’ll discuss their contributions, the challenges they faced, and their efforts in redefining the artistic landscape.
TNE: It sounds incredibly enriching. With the course being offered online, how do you envisage facilitating engagement among participants?
SB: Great question! I’ve structured it to be flexible, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. Additionally, we provide supplementary materials, and I’ll be actively encouraging discussions through an online platform. I believe that interaction enhances the learning experience, enabling participants to share their insights and interpretations.
TNE: As a contemporary art historian and specialist in art and feminism, what has been the most rewarding part of your teaching journey?
SB: Witnessing the “aha” moments in my students is by far the most rewarding aspect. When they connect dots in how contemporary issues intersect with art or when they discover a new appreciation for an artist they previously overlooked—those moments truly make it all worthwhile.
TNE: You mentioned earlier that the course is a complementary offering to the program “From Invisible to Protagonists.” How do these courses align, and what do you hope participants take away from both?
SB: Both courses focus on elevating narratives that have been historically marginalized. While “From Invisible to Protagonists” centers on 20th and 21st century female artists specifically, “Great Masters” looks at the broader context of modern art, including significant movements and figures, both men and women. The goal is for participants to leave with a more holistic understanding of art history and a greater appreciation for the diverse voices that have shaped it.
TNE: What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant about enrolling in an online art course?
SB: I would encourage them to lean into their curiosity! Art is a universal language, and this course is designed for anyone—from enthusiasts to those new to contemporary art. Plus, with the flexibility of online learning, it’s a fantastic opportunity to explore something you’re passionate about from the comfort of your home.
TNE: Thank you, Susana! This course sounds like an incredible chance for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of art. We wish you the best of luck with it!
SB: Thank you! I’m excited to see people engage with these powerful stories and learn more about the great women who have shaped the art world. I appreciate the opportunity to share this with your readers!
