Fox has announced the cancellation of the animated comedy “The great North” after five seasons, marking the end of the series’ run on the network.
The decision, first reported by Variety, comes as Fox continues too refine its animation lineup, recently renewing several of its long-running staples. A senior official at the network stated, “We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren adn the amazing cast and crew put into ‘The Great North.’ Its arduous to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons ‘The Great North’ brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.”
From Alaskan Adventures to Final Curtain
“The great North” premiered on Fox in January 2021 and concluded its fifth and final season in September 2025. The show centered on the Tobin family and their lives in Alaska, with a particular focus on the relationship between single father beef, voiced by Nick Offerman, and his daughter judy, portrayed by Jenny Slate. The series distinguished itself with its unique blend of heartwarming family dynamics and quirky humor.
The show’s creative team included Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, both executive producers and writers previously known for their work on “Bob’s Burgers.” Minty Lewis also contributed as a writer, while Loren Bouchard, the creator of “Bob’s Burgers,” served as an additional executive producer. Production was handled by 20th Television Animation in collaboration with bento Box Entertainment.
A Stellar Voice Cast
beyond Offerman and Slate, “The Great North” boasted an impressive voice cast including Will Forte, Paul Rust, Aparna Nancherla, Dulce Sloan, Megan Mullally, and a special recurring role for Alanis Morissette, who voiced herself as Judy’s imaginary friend appearing in the Northern Lights.
The series followed the “Alaskan adventures of the Tobin family, as single dad Beef does his best to keep his bunch of kids close – especially his only daughter, Judy, whose artistic dreams lead her away from the family fishing boat and into the glamorous world of the local mall,” according to the show’s official logline. the Tobin family also included Judy’s brother Wolf and his wife Honeybee, middle brother Ham, and younger brother Moon, each contributing to the show’s comedic tapestry.
Fox’s Animation Strategy
The cancellation of “The Great North” arrives shortly after Fox announced renewals for its established animated hits – “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers” – each receiving four additional seasons in April. “American Dad” is also set to return for the 2025-2026 season with a four-season pickup. Fox’s current animated programming also includes newer series like “Krapopolis,” “Grimsburg,” and “Global basic Guys,” signaling a continued investment in the genre.
The decision to end “The Great North” underscores the competitive landscape of network television and the evolving strategies for maintaining a successful animation lineup. While the show may be gone, its five seasons provided a unique and memorable addition to Fox’s Animation Domination block.
