Green partnership with EU and UK within COP discussed in Brazil

The Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan is on a visit to the city of Foz do Iguaçu to participate in energy events held within the framework of Brazil’s G20 presidency Parviz Shahbazovheld a number of meetings.

It was noted that 3 of the 14 initiatives put forward by the COP29 Presidency cover the energy sector.

An exchange of views took place in connection with the activities planned jointly with the EU within the framework of the COP, including the presentation of a preliminary report on the feasibility study of the project with the participation of the President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen, Georgia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, as well as companies and financial institutions during a high-level event on the “Green Energy Corridor Caspian-Black Sea-Europe”

The current state of work on this corridor and steps taken towards expanding the project by joining the countries of Central Asia were reviewed.

It is reported that an application for PMI (Project of Common Interest) status will be submitted next year. The construction of green energy infrastructure to Europe through Turkey via Nakhchivan was also touched upon, the importance of these projects was assessed in the context of the expected growth in electricity demand in Europe, energy security and energy transition.

At a meeting with the Deputy Secretary of State Kerry McCarthy The Department of Energy Security and Net Zero of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland expressed satisfaction with the development of a long-term strategic partnership between countries in the field of energy, diversified in the direction of green energy and decarbonization.

In particular, it was emphasized that a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of transition to clean energy is being implemented. The importance of the Shafag project, implemented jointly with BP, in decarbonizing the oil and gas industry of Azerbaijan was noted.

The meeting also discussed COP29 energy initiatives on a “green energy zone and corridor”, strengthening electricity grids and increasing energy storage capacity, as well as hydrogen development. The UK was invited to join these initiatives, which achieved the goal of the energy transition.

In addition to participating in Energy Day events, the funding needed to advance COP’s climate and green energy transition goals was discussed, as well as the possibility of collaborating with the UK on potential initiatives.
