The Green politician Paula Piechotta attacked Olaf Scholz below the belt. The first attempt at an apology also met with criticism within the party – this was then followed by a second one.

The Green Party’s housekeeper Paula Piechotta received criticism with a harsh insult to Chancellor Olaf Scholz – and finally asked for an apology on Saturday morning. On X she wrote: “I apologize for the choice of words and use of the term asshole.” Piechotta admitted that their wording “did not meet the requirements of a fair election campaign.”

In a podcast, the Leipzig member of the Bundestag had previously claimed that Scholz was isolated in European politics. In this context she then said: “I would say that the SPD has known Olaf Scholz for a very long time. Everyone in the SPD knows that Olaf Scholz is an asshole.”

Several politicians then criticized Piechotta for her choice of words. SPD parliamentary group vice-president Detlef Müller wrote on And SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch told t-online that the statements were disrespectful. Piechotta’s “attempt to downplay the degradation of the Chancellor through flippant tweets” doesn’t make things any better either.

After the first criticism of Piechotta arose, the Greens initially claimed that they had not insulted Scholz at all. She only reproduced internal SPD statements, she wrote on Friday evening in a series of posts on X.

She also received incomprehension from her own party. Monika Herrmann, Green mayor of the Berlin district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg from 2013 to 2021, replied to Piechotta: “If you don’t insult people, you don’t have to make long explanations here. So leave it alone.”

Referring to Green Party leader Felix Banaszak, Herrmann further wrote: “Felix had already said it, we’ll leave the ‘bar fights’ to the others, for good reason!” In a recently published interview with the “Web.de” portal, Banaszak said that his party “didn’t want to get drawn into political bar brawls” but instead wanted to keep a cool head: “I think part of the popularity of my party is also based on our political style.”
