GTA 6 Launch Projected to Trigger Massive U.S. Workplace Absences

As Rockstar Games prepares to release Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026, employee time-off requests are surging 9% to 17% above normal seasonal averages.

Planners at companies across the country likely anticipated the usual autumn leave requests for holiday travel when Rockstar Games selected a Thursday for the launch of its long-awaited franchise entry. Instead, human-resources software providers and economists are tracking an entirely different kind of scheduling crunch. Data from HR software firm BambooHR indicates that paid-time-off requests for November 19 are running well above a normal third Thursday of November, with lifts spanning 9% to 17% against historical baselines, according to coverage compiled by Diario AS and other outlets. That surge arrives on top of intense consumer demand. According to data from Sensor Tower, more than 5.2 million people have shown interest.

Game Launch Could Cause $1 Billion Economic Loss

José García Montalvo, an economics professor at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, estimates that roughly 1.5 million Americans will call out sick when the game drops, generating what International Business Times characterized as an academic projection. Working from an average annual output of $70,000 per U.S. worker and assuming a short-term productivity dip of 2%, Montalvo projects a single-day economic loss of $1 billion. The scale of the impending absence wave has drawn notice from financial analysts and academic researchers alike.

That projected tally places the launch in territory usually reserved for major sporting spectacles. By comparison, UKG’s annual Super Bowl Absenteeism Survey found that 22.6 million U.S. employees planned to miss work the Monday after the Super Bowl, resulting in an estimated $5.2 billion productivity loss. Yet unlike a Sunday night football game, a mid-November video game release encourages workers to stack their days off.

Marketing Takeovers In Miami And Global Metros

Publisher Take-Two Interactive and developer Rockstar Games have backed the title with an aggressive promotional rollout that has transformed physical spaces in major cities. In Miami, where the fictional setting of Vice City finds its real-world counterpart, the company spent $975,000 to install a massive neon sign atop the arena home to the Miami Heat. The promotion extends to the hardwood itself: the Heat will face the Milwaukee Bucks on November 18 wearing GTA 6-themed jerseys on a bespoke Vice City court, serving as the final marketing beat before the game arrives on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Fans in Miami can also visit physical pop-ups modeled after Burger Shot, the fast-food chain featured inside the game’s virtual universe. Internationally, cities such as Paris, Los Angeles, and New York have been plastered with key art and in-universe brand advertisements.

Take-Two Interactive Sets November 2026 Global Launch

The parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed a November 19, 2026 global launch. The release of the title is expected to be a massive event.

The previous entry in the series, released in 2013, is expected to accrue upwards of $10 billion in gross lifetime revenue. For players like 43-year-old Amy Gettler, who has taken vacation time for every installment since playing the 2013 release, the ritual remains unchanged. Gettler preordered the $79.99 standard version—or $99.99 for the ultimate edition—and plans to take paid time off on the Thursday release date.
