Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho “We will mobilize all administrative power to improve transportation convenience and revitalize the local economy.”

Plans for rail transportation through Anyang City, including the underground Gyeongbu Line, GTX-C Line, and Shinansan Line, are becoming visible.

While subway lines 1 and 4 pass through Anyang, the installation of four additional railway lines, including the GTX-C line, Wolgot-Pangyo line, Indeokwon-Dongtan line, and Shinansan line, has been confirmed and is being promoted. If the Gyeongbu Line goes underground, it is expected that the city will be transformed by creating residential, commercial, and green spaces instead of railroad tracks on the ground near the station.

Connecting cities disconnected by railway… Gyeongbu Line underground project becomes more resilient with passage of special law

The Gyeongbu Line underground project gained momentum as the ‘Special Act on Railroad Undergrounding and Integrated Development of Railway Sites (hereinafter referred to as the Special Act)’, which contains comprehensive plans and implementation plans for above-ground railways, was passed in the plenary session of the National Assembly in January of this year. The Gyeongbu Line underground project is a project to underground the Gyeongbu Line section with a total length of 32 km, from Seoul Station to Anyang Station to Dangjeong Station. The Gyeongbu Line in Anyang City is about 7.5km long, from Seoksu Station to Myeonghak Station.

The railway in this section passes above ground, cutting off Anyang from east to west, preventing efficient development of the region, and causing problems such as noise and dust. The city has been preparing the Gyeongbu Line underground project since the 5th popular election to connect the divided city and promote balanced development.

Anyang City proposed the Gyeongbu Line undergroundization project to six local governments, including Seoul, Geumcheon, Guro, Dongjak, Yeongdeungpo, Yongsan, and Gunpo, and formed the Gyeongbu Line Underground Promotion Council (first president Choi Dae-ho) in 2012. In October of the same year, the council conducted a signature campaign calling for the Gyeongbu Line to be underground, with 1.03 million people participating in the signature campaign, and in February 2013, it delivered a proposal calling for the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Line to the 18th Presidential Transition Committee.

Afterwards, the basic concept service for undergrounding the Gyeongbu Line was launched in June 2013, the final report was held in May 2014, and a proposal was submitted to the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in January 2022, consistently requesting the government to promote the undergrounding project. The recently passed special law reflected much of the content of the proposal submitted at the time.

The city explains that the costs required to promote the underground project can be covered by the proceeds from converting the above-ground land into business/commercial facilities, residences, and cultural spaces. Once the underground railroad is completed, it is expected to have a significant impact on not only improving the transportation environment but also alleviating the housing crisis and creating jobs through the development of above-ground railroad sites.

The seven local governments are preparing for the next step together. On the 20th, the Gyeongbu Line Underground Promotion Council agreed to submit a joint proposal to the government requesting that the Gyeongbu Line (Seoul Station – Dangjeong Station) section be selected as a lead project.

GTX-C Indeokwon Station is targeted for completion in 2028… Arrive from Indeokwon to Gangnam in 15 minutes

Preparations for the opening of Indeokwon Station on the GTX-C route are also progressing smoothly.

The GTX-C line is an 86.46 km long line connecting Yangju (Deokjeong Station) to Suwon (Suwon Station), with a total of 14 stations, and Indeokwon Station is installed in Anyang. Last January, the city signed an ‘Agreement to Install GTX-C Line Indeokwon Station’ with GTXC Co., Ltd., a private project developer, and according to the agreement, the city and GTXC Co., Ltd. will begin construction in the second half of this year. When the GTX-C line opens in 2028, you will be able to get from Anyang Indeokwon Station to Samseong Station in Seoul within 15 minutes, Suwon Station within 15 minutes, and Yangju (Deokjeong Station) within 40 minutes.

Indeokwon Station becomes a quadruple station area with the GTX-C line, Wolgot~Pangyo Line, and Indeokwon~Dongtan Line added to the existing Line 4.

Four new stations on the Wolgot-Pangyo Line are scheduled to be built in Anyang by 2028. Construction of Anyang Station Section 6 near Byeoksan Intersection in Manan-gu began in February last year, and construction of the remaining sections is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

Three new stations on the Indeokwon-Dongtan Line are scheduled to be built in Anyang by 2028. Construction of tunnel 1 in the area of Beolmal Ogeori, Dongan-gu began in November 2021, and construction of the remaining sections is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

In addition, the city is pursuing a project to create a ‘compact city’ around Indeokwon Station. The city established and announced an urban development project zone designation and development plan in April of this year after lifting the development restriction zone for a site of approximately 150,973 m2 in 157 Gwanyang-dong, Dongan-gu in September 2021.

It is planned to begin site development construction in 2025, and when the compact city is created in the future, Anyang Indeokwon will have effects such as influx of population and improvement of residential environment through the creation of a complex transfer center, apartments including youth housing, and a public knowledge industry center. The city expects to be able to enjoy it.

Anyang Mayor Choi Dae-ho said, “With the passage of the GTX-C route, which was achieved in unison with 550,000 Anyang citizens, and the special law for undergrounding the Gyeongbu Line, Anyang City will stand tall as a base for metropolitan railways,” adding, “We will use all of our administrative power to not only improve transportation convenience but also maximize the revitalization of the local economy.” “We will mobilize everything,” he said.
