Amaravati: After a couple committed suicide after being harassed and threatened by online loan agents, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has directed officials to take strict action against illegal money transfer apps that are harassing people. He also said that strict action will be taken against illegal and non-RBI approved loan apps. The central government has also asked to remove fake loan apps from Play Store.

On the 5th of this month, K. Durgarao (32) and Ramya Lakshmi (24), natives of Rajahmundry, committed suicide after being threatened by an online loan gang. They were married six years ago. They have daughters aged four and two. Durga Rao was a painter and Ramya Lakshmi was a seamstress. Due to financial problems, they borrowed Rs 50,000 from the apps ‘Rupee Tiger’ and ‘Handy Loan’.

But when they failed to repay on time, the loan recovery agents started threatening them. With this, the couple paid a small amount, but continued to threaten to send the entire amount. A few days ago, Durga Rao started working as a delivery boy to earn money.

Ramya threatened to spread morphed nude pictures of Lakshmi on social media if the money was not returned on time. Then the nude photos were sent to relatives via WhatsApp. According to the police report, they committed suicide because of this.
