Higher resolution and faster transmission: According to media reports, HDMI 2.2 will be presented in January. What is known about the new transmission standard.
Seven years ago, HDMI 2.1 (HDMI Ultra High Speed) was introduced as the fastest transmission standard for high-resolution image and sound signals. Now the successor will be shown next January: HDMI 2.2. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface.
The organization behind it, HDMI Licensing Administrator, has invited people to a press conference during the CES trade fair (January 6th to 11th, 2025) in Las Vegas. Time: January 6th, 10 a.m. local time.
As the invitation states, the technology is intended to provide “content producers such as television, film and game studios with higher quality options now and in the future.” This can be guaranteed through higher bandwidth, resolutions and refresh rates.
The message mentions that a new HDMI cable will be necessary for this. The currently fastest standard HDMI 2.1 – also called HDMI Ultra High Speed – also requires a suitable cable to transmit content.
There are currently four so-called HDMI classes:
Nothing is yet known about the speed of HDMI 2.2. It will probably take some time until devices that use the new standard come onto the market.
The IT magazine “Heise online” writes that three years passed from the introduction of HDMI 2.1 to the publication of suitable graphics cards. It will take some time until televisions and other entertainment media such as game consoles use the HDMI 2.2 standard.
