The book exhibition “Jafar Jabbarli – 125”, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding playwright, opened at the Azerbaijan National Library named after M.F. Akhundzade, Day.Az reports.

The exhibition presents the author’s works and his translations, as well as books about the life and work of Jafar Jabbarli in Azerbaijani and foreign languages.

Jafar Jabbarli is an outstanding playwright, poet, prose writer, theater director, translator, screenwriter, journalist, director, honored artist, who has exceptional merits in the development of Azerbaijani literature, culture and art.

He was born on March 20, 1899 in the village of Khizi. After the death of his father in 1902, the family of three-year-old Jafar Jabbarli moved to Baku. Initially, he studied the Koran, after which he entered the Badal-bek school, where he was taught by the father of the poet Mikail Mushfig, Mirza Gadir Ismayilzade. Later, he continued his education at a Muslim-Russian school, where he was taught by famous writers Suleiman Sani Akhundov and Abdulla Shaig. He then entered the electromechanical department of the Polytechnic School.

In 1920, he entered the Baku State University at the Faculty of Medicine, but due to lack of interest in medicine, he soon transferred to the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

One of the early poems of a 12-year-old boy was published in the newspaper Hagighat and Afkar in 1911. He wrote stories and dramas in 1915-1916. Jafar’s early satirical poems and stories were directed against social inequality, women’s lack of rights and backwardness. Among the playwright’s masterpieces are “Faithful Saria, or Laughter through Tears”, “Wilted Flowers”, “Nasreddin Shah”, “Trablis War” (“Star”), “Conquest of Edirne”, “Baku War”, “Aydin”, ” Seville”, “Oktay Eloglu”, “Diamond” and other plays.

Jafar Jabbarli also made translations of dramatic works – “Hamlet” and “Othello” by Shakespeare, “The Robbers” by Schiller, “The Marriage of Figaro” by Beaumarchais, “Intervention” by Slavin, “Fear” by Afinogenov on the stage of the Azerbaijan Drama Theater were staged in his translations. He is considered the founder of the school of film screenwriters in Azerbaijan – films were made based on two of his plays “Seville” and “Almaz” in 1929 and 1936, respectively.

Jafar Jabbarli died at the age of 35 from heart failure.

The Azerbaijanfilm film studio was named in his honor. Also, a street and metro station in Baku, theaters and museums, libraries and cultural centers bear his name.
