Hijab Row Verdict :: Wearing hijab is not a basic practice of Islam .. Karnataka High Court ruling upholding the ban

The Karnataka High Court has ruled that wearing the hijab is not a basic practice of Islam. It also dismissed petitions against the ban on wearing the hijab in educational institutions.

In the state of Karnataka, Islamic students were banned from wearing the hijab to schools last February. Against this, Islamic students came to class wearing hijab at the Government PU College in Kundapura, Udupi district. However they were not allowed on the school premises.

Later, students wearing hijab were denied admission to educational institutions in other parts of Karnataka. Meanwhile, tensions escalated as some of the students started wearing saffron to protest the hijab-wearing students. In this situation, the students filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court against the ban on hijab.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit and Justice JM Ghazi heard the case. Under the circumstances, the case against the hijab ban was ruled today. Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi read out the verdict. At the time, the chief justice ruled that wearing the hijab was not a major religious practice of the Islamic faith, and dismissed cases against the ban on the hijab.
