This is a press release from the head of the Burkinabè online media La Tribune Du Faso announcing the suspension of the organ’s publications.

Following a call for projects, your online daily La Tribune du Faso (www.latribunedufaso.net) received a note from the Private Press Support Fund (FAPP), dated October 10, 2023, informing it that following during the work of the Financing Committee, our request for cash credit was accepted. This same note invited us to contact Wendkuni Bank International (WBI) for the formalities and the provision of our credit.

To this end, upon receipt of the notification from the FAPP on October 10, 2023 and due to the urgency, we duly contacted our account manager for further action. The latter referred us to another manager. This other manager also referred us to another manager. Until October 16, 2023, we were made to understand that the FAPP had not yet transmitted the WBI notification. After checking, this was not the case. The FAPP had done its job correctly.

On the afternoon of October 19, 2023, we went to see the new manager responsible for examining our file. The deadlines were cordial and we were reassured that what was necessary would be done. On October 24, 2023, we contacted the manager who made us understand that the file had been investigated and that he was awaiting the decision from the General Management of Wendkuni Banque International.

On November 6, 9 and 14, 2023, we attempted to contact the said manager by telephone with no response. Our objective was to better explain what this money should be used for and to indicate the urgency. It was on the afternoon of November 14, 2023 that this manager made us understand that he was no longer handling our file, to contact the first manager mentioned above. Back to square one after more than a month of ping-pong. Everyone will appreciate the seriousness with which this bank treats its customers.

We reconnected with the first manager who made us understand that the file was still under investigation at General Management. We restarted the bank without success. On December 1, 2023, we again went to the headquarters of Wendkuni Bank International to see our account manager for several matters including that of cash credit. We were assured that the funds would be made available the following week (from December 4 to 10, 2023). We took the opportunity to make our interlocutor of the day understand the precariousness in which we live at the moment with our colleagues.

Despite this patience of more than two months, the bank has not moved one iota. Why does the bank refuse to respect the agreement which binds it to the ministry in charge of communication through the FAPP? Why doesn’t the bank explain to us this tacit refusal which does not reveal its name? Why is the bank trying to save time? What is behind this unpatriotic attitude of a Burkinabè bank?

While our authorities are doing everything to preserve our achievements, including press freedom, Wendkuni Bank International has decided to go against the tide by reducing us to silence. Economically out of steam and no longer able to ensure a minimum of financial security for our operations, we regret to announce the technical unemployment of the entire editorial team as of Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. and this until further notice.

Consequently, we decide to suspend publications on the website www.latribunedufaso.net and on the newspaper’s digital platforms as of this Saturday, December 23, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. We thank FAPP for trying to reason with the bank without success. We also thank SEP and SYNATIC for coming forward with this information.

History will remember that it was due to a Burkinabè banking institution that a media run by young Burkinabè people to provide information was reduced to silence. History will record that we tried to undertake in the land of honest men but we could not.

Happy New Year 2023.

May 2024 be a year of peace and cohesion for our nation.

The Publication Director
