The DCTA staff has compiled a comprehensive roundup of family-friendly shows within a 30-mile radius of the nation’s capital, offering a diverse range of options to create lasting holiday memories.

A Diverse Calendar of Festive Events

From heartwarming classics to culturally rich celebrations, the DC area’s holiday performance schedule offers something for everyone. This year’s lineup includes beloved favorites like The Grinch and The Nutcracker, alongside unique productions showcasing diverse traditions and artistic expression.

District of Columbia: A Hub of Holiday Cheer

The nation’s capital is a focal point for festive entertainment. Step Afrika!’s Magical Musical Holiday Step Show returns to the Arena Stage (December 5-23), blending the vibrant tradition of African American stepping with the magic of the season. Theater J presents Chanukah in the Dark (December 6-21), a poignant story of family, tradition, and the discovery of inner light.

For a free family outing, the DC Public Library’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library hosts a Winter Family Festival on December 7, featuring performances by the Washington School of Ballet Southeast Ensemble and Blue Sky Puppet Theatre. The Kennedy Center will host two beloved holiday concerts: A Candlelight Christmas (December 14-22), featuring spirited brass and a festive chorus, and A Family Christmas with the Choral Arts Society of Washington (December 20-24), complete with sing-alongs and a visit from Santa.

Teatro de la Luna also celebrates DAY OF THE THREE KINGS – The Three Kings Day (January 6, 2026) with arts, crafts, and a festive atmosphere.

Maryland: From Puppets to Motown Magic

Across the Potomac River, Maryland boasts a rich array of holiday performances. Imagination Stage in Bethesda presents The Snowman and the Snowdog (November 22-January 4), a new musical told through puppetry and theater magic. Baltimore Center Stage offers Santa Claus is Comin’: A Motown Christmas Revue (November 26-January 4), reimagining classic holiday favorites with the sounds of Motown.

Adventure Theatre MTC in Glen Echo Park brings Frosty the Snow Man to life (November 26-January 11), promising a merry and comical romp for all ages. The Puppet Co. in Glen Echo Park offers two enchanting productions: The 37th Annual Nutcracker (November 28-December 31), a unique spin on the classic Tchaikovsky tale, and Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins (December 11-22), a heartwarming story of courage and celebration.

For a dose of Junie B. Jones’ irrepressible spirit, Maryland Ensemble Theatre’s The Fun Company presents Junie B. in Jingle Bells Batman Smells (November 29-December 21).
