BOLZANO. A space dedicated to children suffering from chronic and complex illnesses is born. Where? Inside the Bolzano hospital (in one of the internal courtyards of the old complex, near the former emergency room). It will be ready before Christmas. Thanks to the tireless work of the non-profit association Nemo for children with chronic and complex illnesses in South Tyrol, the implementation of the project is in its final stages.
«A building entirely constructed of wood which will have to accommodate the play and leisure spaces of those young patients forced today to spend entire days of “day hospital” in the corridors of the hospital, without having an adequate place in which to pass the recovery time. waiting between one visit and another”, says the doctor Lydia Pescollderunggformer head of the pediatric department and president of Nemo.
The latter is a voluntary association founded on the initiative of a group of mothers – with the support of pediatric department of San Maurizio – to support children in South Tyrol suffering from chronic and complex pathologies. These are diseases that require recurrent therapies and hospitalizations, continuous and prolonged treatment over the years, and which have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients and their families, such as in the case of rare and degenerative diseases, chronic neonatal pathologies and acute, genetic syndromes, congenital malformations, cystic fibrosis, diabetes mellitus and many others.
In these years of activity, the Nemo non-profit organization has done an incredible job of fundraising and, together with the contribution of many citizens who have joined the various initiatives organized by Nemo, such as the offers for Christmas panettone, the lottery, the of the Foxes, the ski race and much more, managed to accumulate the resources necessary for the construction of the project. «Today it is a great satisfaction to see the start of a long-awaited construction site which will be able to solve an important logistical problem of the hospital activity for the benefit of Nemo’s children but also of all the oncology children hospitalized in the pediatric department who will be able to take advantage of new spaces in a comfortable and protected area”, says Pescollderungg.
«This is the opportunity for Nemo to publicly thank the Sparkasse Foundation, the Volksbank, the Haselsteiner foundation, who, together with the Peter Pan association, strongly believed in our project and ensured not only that it could come to life, but that may it also be inaugurated soon”, underlines the president on behalf of the entire board. The association is also waiting for a contribution from the Province.
An elevated shell covered on the external facades by a climbing green wall and illuminated by a central glass courtyard. A total surface area of 184 square meters for 700 cubic meters of volume divided with movable walls into three distinct sectors. «Great attention was paid to the internal quality of the building in the design to guarantee living comfort for the little guests. All obviously designed in full compliance with the regulations imposed for hospital constructions”, this is how architect Luca Marastoni describes the new space, who generously offered to take care of the project from an architectural and authorization point of view and of its implementation with companies locals who care about our territory. «A special thanks, therefore, to the Rasom Wood Tecnology company which built the entire structure, to Climatec for the heating systems, to Plantec for the execution of the electrical systems and to Carpenteria Druso which will create the windows and doors. All companies that have decided to participate in this initiative by making their professionalism available while maximizing costs to promote the association” underlines Marastoni on behalf of the entire Nemo management.
Now the construction is moving quickly and we hope to be able to complete the work before Christmas so we can say goodbye to the holidays and give a real gift to all the children in the department. «The Nemo project has until now been the primary aim pursued by the association, created in order to contribute to alleviating, at least in part, the difficulties that young patients and their families are forced to face on a daily basis; but Nemo continues and will continue its activity in support of children suffering from chronic and complex illnesses in Alto Adige, «being able to count on the support of citizens and all those who share our mission and whom we thank on behalf of the entire board and of all Nemo’s children”, concludes Pescollderungg.
