Düsseldorf Since the US start-up OpenAI released the voice assistant ChatGPT last November, the application based on artificial intelligence (AI) has become a topic of conversation worldwide. It becomes more intelligent with every user command, and new functions are constantly being created that help to use the AI in professional life and in everyday life.
ChatGPT was trained in English, but it also speaks numerous other languages. How can the AI be used in German? What is the difference between German and English ChatGPT? Where is the application available? Everything you need to know about it.
On which pages is the German ChatGPT available?

The first source is the ChatGPT developer’s website or app itself: On chat.openai.com anyone can use the voice assistant after registering and logging in. The standard version is available free of charge. In February, OpenAI also launched a payment model that is also available in Germany. Billing is in dollars, so the euro price fluctuates depending on the exchange rate. Cost: $20 per month.
Paid customers get guaranteed and better access – in the past the free application was not always available due to congestion. OpenAI also announced a subscription model for business customers for the coming months. The data entered is not used to train the AI with the “ChatGPT Business Subscription”, and you should also have better control “in the management of the end customer”.
- Also about the search engine Bing the technology can be used. Microsoft’s service uses GPT-4, the language model underlying ChatGPT. With a search command, the AI responds with the words “Hello, I’m Bing, your AI-controlled co-pilot for the web.” With a click, the user is forwarded to a chat field. Instead of a list of links, you now get complete answers. The group soon wants to expand the office applications with AI-supported assistants.
How can the AI be used?
The AI can be used in the same way in German and English. Basically, the functions are the same. ChatGPT adapts the language of its answers to the users. To get German answers, the question should be formulated in German – to get English answers in English.

It is also possible to formulate the question in English and add the addition “please speak German”. Then ChatGPT answers in German.
Can ChatGPT also translate?
ChatGPT is able to translate texts. To do this, users must integrate the source and target language into their input.
If you would like to translate a text from German to English, enter the text in the question field and add the phrase “from German to English”. The interesting thing: “The AI can translate, although it was never trained to translate,” says AI expert Katharina Zweig. “She learned the essence of language.” Because she was not given a text in two languages and asked to translate it, but learned to translate using a gigantic amount of text data in different languages.
ChatGPT: How good is the German version in comparison?
One thing is clear: ChatGPT was mostly trained with English data. Therefore, it can be assumed that the application as a whole works better in this language. From the expert’s point of view, however, the differences can be ignored because the language patterns are similar in both languages. In addition, the German version should get better and better as it becomes more widespread, because the language model is trained in the language with every request in German.
What other AI models are there?
In addition to OpenAI, there are other companies that use language models to analyze documents, for research and for programming:
- The German AI start-up Aleph Alpha, for example, has developed the language assistant Luminous, which can write texts, analyze longer documents such as books and answer questions about the content. Luminous speaks five languages and can also evaluate images. With the latest innovation, the company wants to create more transparency: In April, Aleph Alpha released an “explanation function”. This is intended to help users to understand whether the information is reliable in order to prevent false information from being spread.
- Blu Analytics helps with research and extraction of large amounts of data. The German AI company evaluates financial news in real time, forecasts its consequences for the financial markets and supports investment decisions.
- There are also smaller German companies that offer text generators, such as Neuroflash. The Hamburg-based company promises to generate five text suggestions on a specific topic in five seconds. The application can be used for translations, summaries and keyword research, among other things.

An example of a programming wizard is Starcoder. The US company masters more than 80 programming languages with its language model. What is special here is the ability to capture large amounts of code faster and more efficiently. Access is free.
